The solopreneur safety net

When you work for yourself, nobody’s coming to save you.

In a full-time role, a “bad month” for your employer doesn’t affect your daily life one bit. But when YOU are the company and have a slow month (or five), things get dicey — fast. If your way of life is 100% dictated by clients’ willingness to hire you, the helplessness can be overwhelming.

What you need is a Solopreneur Safety Net™: Some source(s) of income that’s unaffected by the whims of choosy clients and doesn’t require a huge input of your precious time — so you can keep the boat afloat when times get tough. For me, that’s website templates. I started selling templates for Squarespace in March 2022, and the financial safety net has legitimately changed my life.

Your mileage will vary — the model of delivery can flex and change based on your own business model, experiences, and how much time you want to invest. But, here are some popular ideas that I’ve personally seen creatives on the internet use to make thousands of extra income each month:

  • Templates (Notion, Framer, etc)

  • Courses (single-goal or long-form)

  • Paid Newsletter (like a written course)

  • Memberships (access to you, community)

  • Presets (Lightroom, UI kits, etc)

  • Mockups (Photoshop, gradients, etc)

  • Coaching (short, focused 1:1 chats)

“But everything’s overdone! I don’t want to be spammy! What if nobody buys it and I look dumb!” — but, what do you have to lose? Spend a few weekends making one of these, and I’d be shocked if absolutely nothing comes from it. Focus on making something excellent, unique, and true to you.
