Efficiency and innovation
Efficiency and innovation are opposites.
The former relies on the removal of waste to make things run smoother, and the latter depends on waste being present in order to uncover hidden value. I’d submit that both are necessary in our creative practices in order to lead successful, fulfilling careers. However, the activities for each must be done independently in order to accomplish anything of merit.
For example: Trying to imagine an inventive new art direction for a client probably shouldn’t involve neatly organizing every pixel as you go. Conversely, meticulous development of a client’s website most likely can’t be done (well) while letting your mind wander, waiting for inspiration to strike.
Practice efficiency, practice innovation—just not at the same time.
