Wonderfully human

I’ve never been a fan of how people tend to take credit for good things, but place responsibility elsewhere for the bad.

Didn’t land a client?
“They don’t know what they’re missing!”

Facing a challenging situation?
“Just bad luck I guess.”

Getting negative (justified) criticism?
“Haters gonna hate.”

Almost have a car accident?
“Devil’s trying to take me out!”

The language we use often aligns with how we interpret the world around us. I’d submit that even the “innocent” remarks that dissolve us of responsibility deceive us just a little bit more, making us believe that there’s some kind of pattern or story behind our hardships. That the universe is conspiring against us in our noble quest for The Good Life™, and we (the hero, obviously) must persevere amidst challenges set forth to stop us!

But, some sobering truths:

  1. Life is more random than you think.

  2. You’re not as special as you think.

  3. You have so much less control than you think.

And yet, everything will be okay. Don’t give in to hopelessness… but also refuse to be sucked into a false narrative that paints you as the center of the universe. You’re both wonderfully powerful AND powerless, and that’s what makes us human. Let that be enough.
