Troubleshooting

I just spent an hour trying to get to the bottom of this new issue a customer pointed out in one of my templates. No matter what I tried, things I googled, or obscenities typed at ChatGPT, I couldn’t figure it out.

Turned out to be a few lines of conflicting code from another update that — you guessed it — I didn’t realize was a problem when I added it. I shudder to think about the number of self-made problems I’ve made for myself, and that we each face on a daily basis. Some takeaways from this not-so-rare occurrence:

  1. Always, always, always double-check the simple fixes before going super deep into troubleshooting mode.

  2. Assume that something is either a misunderstanding or missing context before blaming anyone but yourself.

  3. Problems are opportunities for improvement, hiding behind a bit of ingenuity, time, and hard work.
