Diverse focus

At any given moment, I’m torn between two polar opposites of running a one-man creative business:

  1. Diversify — reduce risk and create a safety net by spreading out possible revenue sources, generating unique income, and always trying new things.

  2. Focus — triple-down on what’s working, ignore distractions in any form (even good ones), and be steadfastly resilient in the face of challenges.

A layer deeper is how to diversify: Do you create things that “stack” and make your content, online persona, and options for growth extremely compatible? Or do you make them so different that the risk is extremely reduced if an entire industry flips upside down tomorrow?

Obviously, there’s no single right answer to any of these questions (yay existential business thoughts). But, I think being aware of these meta-questions can help solo practitioners make more conscious decisions about where to spend their time, and how to most effectively structure their business model for the life they want.

Build your business on purpose.
