Cons + pros

Not sure how to decide on something? Make a “cons + pros” list.

It’s usually easier to identify what you dislike than what you like (human nature I suppose), so start with the cons — flaws and frustrations stick out like a sore thumb, while the nuanced (possibly buried) positive attributes require some thought to uncover. The quicker you can get yourself in the mindset of meaningful comparison, the better.

Then, once you’ve gotten the negativity out of your system… lean into the positives of your dilemma, making sure to fairly and accurately represent what draws you toward one thing or another. Doing the “pros” later seems to help with being more level-headed — approaching the subject with careful optimism instead of rose-colored glasses.
