Birthday boy

My son turns one year old today!

There’s a lot I wasn’t prepared for in having a kid (duh). But perhaps the most unexpected is how my perception of time would change simply by having him around. This single year of his little life has felt simultaneously extremely quick AND ridiculously long — some days seemed to last 48 hours, and some weeks went by in a flash of daily monotony.

This awareness yields two lessons for me:

  1. Pay attention. Life goes by so incredibly fast, so keep your eyes peeled for significance, whether in the small moments or large. You never know when a "regular" moment will be one you carry with you forever.

  2. It’ll be okay. When things feel unbearable, you’ll get through it — you always do, and you always will. You're not the first to tackle this challenge, and you won't be the last, so don’t let difficulty dissuade you from giving it your all.
